Deba live at Babel Med 2009
Every spring for five years now, Marseille has hosted the Babel Med trade-fair, a key event in the world music calendar for over 2000 professional delegates keen to discover new artists. Winning the (national radio) France Musique Award this year, Deba are a 15 piece all woman ensemble from the island of Mayotte. Located between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique, Mayotte culture draws on African traditions and Islamic influences. Deba is a Sufi vocal ensemble from the village of Hamjaro, with members aged from 16 to 62 years old. Hearing their hypnotic incantations about earthly and divine love is an enthralling and mystical experience.
